To read or send e-mail, one of several mail readers that are installed on the department systems can be used.  These include: Pine, Mutt, Thunderbird, Outlook and Windows Live Mail.   You may also use any modern web browser and connect to https://my.pitt.edu.   You can login using your Pitt account username and password.  The website may be accessed from anywhere on the Internet and no setup is required on your part.
