The Technical Staff has been working towards deprecating the AFS and Windows accounts that we have long been using in favor of a single Keberos 5 account for all Computer Science resources.

Please see the SSO page for more information about the new environment and why we moved in this direction.

Windows Patches - September 2013

2013-09-13 10:31:21

Everyone,

I’ve approved the monthly patches that Microsoft released earlier this week for installation on departmental Windows machines that are connected to our “AD” domain. These patches will begin installing as early as tomorrow morning at 3 AM. Please log off of your machine before you leave for the day if you do not want to run the risk of losing unsaved work due to a machine reboot.

In addition to the Windows patches, the following updates were set up for deployment:

All Machines

  • Adobe Flash Player Plugin 11.8.800.168

Windows 8 Machines

  • Google Chrome 29.0.1547.67

Windows XP Machines

  • Adobe Flash Player ActiveX 11.8.800.168

These updates will be applied to your machine the next time it reboots.

Finally, Oracle released Java 7 Update 40 earlier this week.  If you run Java on any of the machines you manage (or at home), we urge you to upgrade ASAP.  Java has had and continues to have numerous security vulnerabilities and is one of the top attack vectors used by hackers.  We will be manually upgrading to this version throughout the department starting with the Windows 8 machines that have been recently deployed on some desktops and in the labs.

As always, if you encounter any problems with the update process please let us know at tech@cs.pitt.edu.
